Crawford County Sheriff, Kirk A. Wakefield states that on July 14, 2006 at approximately 1:40 P.M. |Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to Camp Shawano which is located on Howe’s Lake Road in Frederic Township. Camp Shawano is a juvenile detention center. Two of the juveniles that were detained at Camp Shawano escaped through a side door. The staff immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office and began the search for the two juveniles. Roscommon County Sheriff’s Department K9 Officer was called and responded to the Camp and began a track through the woods. Sheriff’s Office personnel along with Shawano staff searched the area. Several sighting of the two juveniles occurred during the search. Two more K9 dogs from the Michigan State Police arrived and began a track. Other Troopers from the Houghton Lake State Police responded to assist with the search. At approximately 3:21 P.M. the first juvenile who was 16 years old was apprehended by the Houghton Lake State Police K9 Officer and a Sheriff’s Deputy from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. The juvenile was apprehended with out incident and transported back to Camp Shawano. At approximately 3:42 P.M. the second juvenile who was 17 years old was apprehended without incident. The juvenile was taken into custody by Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and transported to the Crawford County Jail. The 17 year old was charged with Escape From A Juvenile Facility which is a Felony with the maximum penalty of 4 years in prison. The 17 year old is pending arraignment and will be held in the Crawford County Jail. With the quick response and all of the agencies involved both juveniles were apprehended in a short period of time. The Camp Shawano staff, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Roscommon County Sheriff’s Department K9, Michigan State Police K9 units from Gaylord and Houghton Lake, and the Houghton Lake State Police Post Troopers were all involved in the search and capture of the two juveniles. The names of the juveniles are being with held pending the arraignment of the 17 year old.
