Grayling Michigan 49738NEWS RELEASE
Monday September 4th, 2006
Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield states that on Monday September 4th, 2006, starting at 7:38 PM several phone calls were received reporting a "reckless driver" driving a blue Buick. This vehicle had just run a red light without any attempt to stop.
Deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff's Office and Officers from the Grayling Police Department were dispatched to attempt to locate the vehicle. A cellular caller was able to assist the deputies and officers in pinpointing a location of the vehicle in which officers were able to catch up to the vehicle.
The vehicle was 'all over the road' swerving across traffic lanes. The deputy attempted to pull over the vehicle and the driver refused to stop. During the pursuit of the vehicle, the driver struck several construction barrels and lost control running off the road several times. Deputies successfully stopped the vehicle in the ditch on south bound I-75 at the 248 mile marker. The female driver was removed from the vehicle and transported to the Crawford County Sheriff's Office Jail, upon further investigation, it was learned the female was suffering from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and transported to Grayling Mercy Hospital where she received medical treatment.
Subject was released pending charges of leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and fleeing and eluding police. The female from Mio will not be identified until court process.
A incident was reported later to the Sheriff's office of a accident where a vehicle had struck a tree and garage at a local residence by Lake Margrethe and had left the scene. It was determined from evidence at the scene that this was the same vehicle and driver involved.
During the pursuit, the driver nearly struck several vehicles, including Sheriff's vehicles attempting to stop her.
It is recommended that persons with medical conditions which can affect their driving ability be very cautious before getting behind the wheel for their safety and the safety of others. Persons with specific medical conditions often operate a vehicle in a similar manner as a highly intoxicated driver.
