Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield states: On Monday, October 2, 2006 at approximately 7:21 p.m. deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 2200 E. Four Mile Rd. in regards to an intoxicated male subject creating a disturbance. Upon arrival, the male subject had barricaded himself in the back bedroom of the residence with weapons.
Officers on scene attempted to speak with the subject and get him to come out. The subject refused to leave the bedroom and did fire several shots with a firearm inside the bedroom. Officers then backed out of the residence to await the assistance of the Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Swat Team to respond to the scene.
After several hours of Sheriff Wakefield speaking with the subject on the phone, the subject did exit the residence and surrender peacefully. Deputies and officers took the subject into custody from the Grayling City Police Department at approximately 10:54 p.m. The 57-year-old Grayling Township resident is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm while intoxicated and is currently lodged at the Crawford County Jail, awaiting arraignment and psychological evaluation.
Assisting agencies were the Grayling City Police Department and the Michigan State Police Houghton Lake Post.
