Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield states that on Sunday March 11th, 2007 at approximately 9:47pm, Crawford County Deputies began a 29-mile pursuit that ended in Roscommon County. A local area broadcast was put out to law enforcement agencies about a 14-year-old male that took a pick up without permission and was possibly heading to the Detroit area. Other information with the broadcast stated that the male had a handgun (BB) with him and had shot it at people that attempted to stop him. A description of the male and vehicle was given to Deputies and Grayling City Police at 9:41pm. A Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputy was on I-75 and observed the vehicle. At 9:47pm, the Deputy confirmed the license plate and description and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect failed to pull over and led several Law Enforcement agencies on a 29-mile pursuit, which ended with the suspect striking a Police vehicle and running off the road. The suspect was taken into custody and will be charged with several felonies including Flee and Eluding Police and Felony assault with a vehicle. The suspect refused to get out of the vehicle after he was stopped and Police had to take him out by force. During the pursuit the suspect was throwing items out of his vehicle and attempting to strike patrol cars that were pursuing him. The suspect also ran a couple of vehicles off the road during the chase. There were a couple locations where spike strips were laid down and the suspect missed the strips. The gun was located in the vehicle. The suspects name is being held pending arraignment. Crawford County Sheriff’s Office initiated the pursuit and Grayling City Police, Roscommon County Sheriff’s Department, Gerrish Township Police Department, Denton Township Police Department, Ogemaw County Sheriff’s Department, and Richfield Township Police Department were involved in the pursuit.
