NEWS RELEASE

November 24th, 2007

Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield reports that at approximately 11:40 am Deputies were dispatched to a rollover accident on North Down River Rd. west of Stephan Bridge Rd. in Grayling Township. Upon Officers arrival it was discovered that a westbound minivan had skidded across the centerline on the icy roadway and into the south ditch. The vehicle then struck a power pole snapping it off at the ground. This caused the vehicle to roll over trapping the driver who was the sole occupant of the vehicle inside.

Grayling Township/City Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver from the vehicle.  A MMR ambulance transported the driver to Grayling Mercy Hospital where she was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw to be treated for head injuries. Assisting at the scene were the Michigan State Police out of Houghton Lake and South Branch Township Fire Department.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Dolores Travis, 76 y/o, of Mikado. Travis was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Since the recent snowfall during the Thanksgiving Holiday on Thursday, there have been a total of seven traffic accidents near this location. Law enforcement reminds all drivers to slow down on side roads due to scattered icy conditions that are extremely hazardous.
