Sheriff Kirk A. Wakefield states on
Friday, November 21, 2008 at approximately 8:15 a.m. deputies responded to a house fire in Grayling Township, Crawford County. Once the fire was extinguished it was determined there was a body inside the home. At this point the Sheriff’s Office is attempting to determine the identity of the individual and the name will not be released until notification of next of kin. This incident remains under investigation.
Crawford County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by Grayling, South Branch and Beaver Creek Township Fire Departments and MMR EMS.

(Monday November 24th, 2008)Sheriff Kirk A. Wakefield releases the following information regarding the Friday, November 21, 2008 fatal house fire in Grayling Township, Crawford County. Due to the severity of the fire the body found inside this cannot be positively identified by normal means. Samples are being sent to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab with other evidence collected for D.N.A. testing.
