Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield states that during the 2009 school year author Johnathan Rand made a school visit to the Grayling Elementary School. Deputy Schnoor was teaching DARE at the time and made contact with Johnathan Rand during his visit. Deputy Schnoor and Mr. Rand discussed a cops for kids program that Rand has participated in several areas and other states. Mr. Rand wanted to begin a program with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Schnoor and Rand coordinated a time to meet and on Thursday August 6, 2009 Rand arrived at the Sheriff’s Office to begin the program. The program consists of books from the American Chiller series and Freddie Fernortner, Fearless First Grader series that are written by Rand. When Officers have contact with a child that has been in a traumatic situation or when Officers make contact with children that need to be recognized for doing the right thing they will be awarded a book. Johnathan Rand donated all the books for the program. Kids really love these series from Rand and we are very excited to start this program. Several books were also passed on the Grayling City Police Department to participate in the program.
