NEWS BRIEF
Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield states that on July 29, 2010 at approximately 1:30 p.m. Crawford County Deputies were dispatched to Shawono Center because two inmates had escaped, stealing a motor vehicle in the process. Deputies were given vehicle description and the direction of travel while responding to the call. Deputies were attempting to catch up to the stolen vehicle when Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department made contact and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The suspects fled and a pursuit began in Kalkaska County and ended in Manton, located in Wexford County. Both of the escaped inmates were taken into custody. No one was injured in the incident. The driver of the stolen vehicle is 17 years old and was lodged in the Crawford County Jail. The passenger is 15 years old and was returned to Shawono Center. Both names are being held pending arraignment. Both inmates were charged with several felonies, including escape from a juvenile facility, unlawful driving away of an automobile and fleeing and eluding police.
